My Mum never thought she would be over 40 dating anyone at all. Her fantastic husband and my lovely Dad, died unexpectedly in October 1897 from cancer. One of the dilemmas of dating on line is the fear of rejection. It can be a bit of a shock sometimes to realise that not everyone finds us devastatingly attractive.

Although forty is the new thirty, being forty means that you have probably acquired lots of history…… Online dating is slightly easier than dating cold (meeting someone at the pub and asking them out) as your profile is available for all to see. Exchanging information about each other is necessary if you don’t want to remain strangers, but how much information do you give within a given time. If you and hour date are comfortable with openness and fairly liberal, sharing information of a personal nature is probably ok. If you’re dating someone who is reserved and slightly reticent then telling them all about your murky past and peccadilloes is probably not a good idea. Common sense and a bit of tact are both useful tools! A place to start is probably on neutral ground, for example

• What kind of job you do

All seems pretty mundane, but guaranteed not to send your date running for the nearest exit. Sharing feelings about music, theatre, if you hate football (one for the ladies) is probably fairly safe for a first date. Over 40 dating someone older!If there is one thing I am sure of in life it’s that it doesn’t matter if you are over 40 dating an older person because you get a more experienced and steady person because of it. Obviously, you dont want somebody with a Bobby Charlton haircut and a deep love of the Aldi shopping range who’s favourite drink is Oveltine. You need someone young at heart and with loads of get up and go. The real downside is when the years pass and the older person starts to panic (and they will) that you will trade them in for a younger model or disappear rather than live with a pensioner. There is no answer to this at all unfortunately. The only thing you can do is reassure  the other person and get on with life as usual.

Is over 40 dating a means to an end? For some the answer is yes and that they want to meet a full time partner and maybe get married. For others like me there is no end goal because the journey is enough on its own. I have met an awful lot of really nice people on over 40 dating and many are now my friends. Some, like me were just looking for new friends and some were looking for more. I never lead people on and would feel bad about tricking someone into bed on a false pretence. But I am not alone in not being ready to settle down but not a great one at chat up and flirting. This is a wierd one that I come across time and again. We all say that money doesn’t matter but for most of us it does. You spend all your life making decisions and you have a certain material worth.
